Ballot for the election of the mayor of Gubbio.
Orfeo Goracci is elected with 10623 votes, against the 8573 votes of the former mayor, Ubaldo Corazzi. The Communal Council is found to be composed of 18 Councillors of the majority (Communist Refoundation, Verdi, Together for Gubbio) and 12 Councillors of the minority.

The Park of Coppo, in the vicinity of the Basilica of St. Ubaldo was officially re-opened.
The bar, pizzeria and restaurant structure was also re-opened and enlarged (tel. 0759272755), in the charge of the young eugubinian owner, Fabrizio Alunno. The park had been created about 30 years ago by Mario Rosati, the unforgettable President of the Maggio Eugubino and realized by the Administration of the Province of Perugia.

Armando Angeletti, "Biciglettone", died at the age of 72 in Adelaide (Australia) where he had emigrated to at a very young age.
When he was young he had been a very good football player for the Gubbio team.
In all the years he had lived in Australia, he had never forgotten Gubbio and St.Ubaldo and his ceraiola passion for the Cero of San Giorgio.
He had paid frequent visits to Gubbio in the month of May for the Festa of the Ceri.

Restoration of the Bargello Fountain.
On the initiative of the Lions Club of Gubbio, lead by the president Orietta Colaiacovo Migliarini, the conservative restoration of the
Fountain of San Giuliano, was started, also known as the Fountain of Bargello. The necessary finances for the restoration were offered by the Cassa di Risparmio of Perugia Foundation, but many firms were involved in the restoration work of the Fountain. The works should be completed within five or six months. Around the monument a cage structure has been made to allow tourists and eugubinians to visit the monument even during the period of restoration.

Prizegiving of the graphical pictorial Competition "Oderisi da Gubbio" organized by the Famiglia of the Santubaldari and the the theme is: "The Festa of the Ceri in its many aspects".
The drawing competition, reserved for children of the nursery and elementary schools of Gubbio, has reached its 14th edition.
The winners: Federico Bianconi, Nicolò Cacciamani for the nursery school; Agnese Costantini, Marta Bocci and Francesco Pelicci for the first cycle of elementary schools; Laura Gaggioli, Lorenzo Baldinelli and Eleonora Panfili for the second cycle of the elementary schools.

The anthological exhibition of the eugubinian painter and engraver, Alberico Morena was inaugurated in the Palazzo dei Consoli. His works, about 125, cover the period from 1954 to 2000. The exhibition is promoted by the Commune of Gubbio with the support of the Banca Popolare of Spoleto. Alberico Morena was born in Gubbio 75 years ago and now lives in Spoleto where he has been director of the Art institution for a long period of time.

The archaeological excavations started again in the zone south of the Porta degli Ortacci, rich of antique findings of the Roman Gubbio thanks to the collaboration between the Commune of Gubbio, the Archaeological Superintendence of Umbria and the Archaeological and storical lectureship of greek and roman art of the University of Perugia.
Thirty students of the University of Perugia took part in the escavations, directed by the doctoress Dorica Manconi of the Superintendence of Perugia. A piece of urban road that dates back to the roman period was discovered, while in the near vicinity there could be the remnants of a private domus.

An incurable illness caused the death of Filippo Uccellani at the young age of 45. He was an appreciated, popular and picturesque radio and television conductor on Radio Gubbio and Trg, since it had been founded. His television program which was transmitted on Wednesday evenings "Show of our home" was very popular. He was an excellent local show conductor in Gubbio and even in various Eugubinian communities, especially in France and Luxemburg.

National antique Italian cross-bow tournament.
For the second year consecutively the
Society of Balestrieri of Gubbio wins the National antique Italian cross-bow tournament, which has reached its 36th edition and took place in Gubbio, on Piazza Grande. The Eugubinian cross-bow shooter, Luigi Bregolisse was the winner, succeeded by Marcello Rogari, another eugubinian who made name for himself last year. Bregolisse preceded first Alessandro Cistellli and then Dario Casini, both from Sansepolcro. The fourth position went once more to an eugubinian, Giuseppe Lauri. The society of cross-bow shooters of Gubbio gained the team titles too, preceding in this order: Sansepolcro, Massa Marittima, San Marino and Lucca.
The manifestation ended with the show offered by the "Sbandieratori of Gubbio", the mayor, Orfeo Goracci gave the prizes, and the storical procession.

Gold medal to the national "Ruzzolone" championships. Fausto Tomassoli of the Ruzzolone Sports Society of Gubbio won the gold medal of the category B-single, at the national championships which took place in Narni. Raffaele Minelli, president of the society, was classified fourth.

After winning the National Tournament, Luigi Bregolisse, 37 year old eugubinian cross-bow shooter, won the
tournament of the Quarters, ,making the quarter of San Pietro win. Second place for the quarter of San Giiuliano, followed by that of San Martino and St.Andrea.

Consignment of the works of the Montefiore-Branca
The cerimony of the consignment of the works of the new piece of statal road which leads from Montefiore to Branca took place in the presence of the mayor of Gubbio, Orfeo Goracci, the President of the Region of Umbria, Maria Rita Lorenzetti; the President of the Anas Giuseppe D'Angiolino, the owner of the Firm of Bergamo, "Cavalieri Oliviero", which claimed the work contract for almost 50 billion lire.

The teacher Omero Migliarini passes away.

Omero Migliarini, born in 1929, elementary teacher on pension, but still called "il Maestro" (the "teacher") by everybody, died after a short illness.
He was a person respected by everyone, and remained orphan at the age of 15 when his father was shot among the Forty Martyrs.
Omero was famous for his love towards Gubbio and the Festa of the Ceri, of which he had always been protagonist and ceraiolo of Santubaldo, and of which he had been capodieci in the years: 1956 - '57 - '58.

Fausto, european horse-racing champion (Endurance)
Fausto Fiorucci, eugubinian medical dentist, becomes European Champion of horse-racing Endurance. He won the title of the race which took place on the banks of the Trasimeno lake and in which hundreds of participants from 26 different countries took place
Fiorucci won on the horse, Faris Jarab, a thoroughbred arab horse, in a distance of 160km.
Another eugubinian, Alessandro Baldicchi, 19 years old, won the golden group medal.
The Endurance is a tough discipline which demands great effort from the jockey and the horse: there are veterinarian check-ups every 30 km and the horses which are not in good conditions are excluded from the race.

Parking area for Campers
The Convention was signed between the Common of Gubbio and the Camper Club Association. According to this agreement the association takes control of an area of more than 3000 square metres, in front of the bocciodromo, taking charge of the programmation, organization and handling of the parking are for campers which would be removed from the area of the Roman Theatre, but at the same time would have a valid, practical and functional offer.
The parking place which is specially created for this purpose, will be ready in the spring of 2002.

International information Forum
At the Santo Spirito Service Centre the third edition of the international information forum has been opened, promoted by the Italian Press Federation with the support of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, of the Region of Umbria and the Comune of Gubbio. The theme was "Europe of the media tested by new conflicts".
Apart from important names of italian journalism, there were also present: the President of the Italian Television (RAI), Zaccaria, the President of the Region of Umbria, Lorenzetti, the minister of Innovation: Lucio Stanca, of the Telecommunications: Maurizio Gasparri and of Agricultlural Politics: Giovanni Alemanno.
Among other things during the first day the documentary film was projected, created by the RAI, "From Saigon to Manhattan" with the presentation of Barbara Scaramucci.

In the presence of the Mayor Goracci and the Bishop Bottaccioli, the new sports establishment at Madonna del Ponte was inaugurated.
The work was realized by the parish circle A.N.S.P.I. of Madonna del Ponte which now aims at the realization of a course destined to different uses.
The cerimony was livened up with the presence of the Musical Band of Madonna del Ponte.

The return of "Don Matteo" on TV
From Sunday 21st October the television series on Rai 1 of "Don Matteo 2" returns, filmed in Gubbio.
It is on the air early in the evening for 16 consecutive Sundays.
The series was produced by the "Lux Vide" Society of Rome of Ettore Bernabei, under the direction of Leone Pompucci and Andrea Barzini,
The main actor, the priest Don Matteo, is played by Terrence Hill and he is sided by other famous actors such as Nino Frassica.
In the beginning of 2002 the third series will be filmed, and has already been bought by the RAI.

Truffle exhibition
The exhibition which has already reached its 20th edition, has been set up for the first time in the Arconi of the Palazzo dei Consoli in via Baldassini. This national exhibition not only exposes the white truffle, but also publicizes the typical and arty products of the territory. It is organized by the "Comunità Montana Alto Chiascio". The exhibition was put up in 750 square metres of exposition space of the Arconi for about 35 stands. Promotional spaces were put up in piazza 40 martiri (the old exhibition area) and in piazza San Giovanni.
The Guests of honour of the exhibition were the "Comunità Montana Appennino Modena Ovest", which form part of the national association "City of Truffle" of which Gubbio also forms part, and the city of Santa Teresa of Gallura, in the province of Sassari.

Gli sbandieratori di Gubbio sono ospiti a Londra alla 73° edizione del prestigioso "Royal Variety Perfomance". La loro esibizione applaudita dalla regina Elisabetta II, dal consorte Filippo Duca di Edimburgo e da artisti di fama internazionale come Elton John, Jennifer Lopez e Cher.

L'Albero di Natale più grande del mondo viene acceso alla presenza del sindaco di Gubbio, del ministro Carlo Giovanardi e dell'attrice Maria Grazia Cucinotta. L'Albero rimarrà acceso fino al 10 Gennaio 2002.

Gli uffici anagrafe, elettorale, leva militare e dello stato civile del Municipio di Gubbio vengono trasferiti da P.za S.Giovanni a P.za Bosone, meglio conosciuta come piazzetta di S.Lorenzo, nel complesso dell'ex semininario.
Lo stesso complesso ospita anche i servizi sociali, il settore di programmazione economica e i beni culturali.

Da oggi il settimanale di informazione cittadina "Tutto Gubbio" vine inviato a circa duemila famiglie eugubine che vivono all'estero (812 famiglie in Francia, 116 in Belgio, 56 in USA, 14 in Australia, 556 in Lussemburgo, 84 in Svizzera, 47 in Gran Bretagna, 12 in Argentina, 160 in Canada, 79 in Germania, 44 in Venezuela).
Il progetto, reso possibile dal sensibile sostegno di importanti aziende eugubine, è stato fortemente voluto dall'Editore Francesco Spaziani e dal Direttore Massimo Boccucci.

Nella mattinata sono stati eletti Capodieci del prossimo 15 Maggio: Cesare Marcheggiani per il Cero di S.Ubaldo, Franco Nardelli "Billo" per il Cero di S.Giorgio.
I Santantoniari presenteranno il loro Capodieci (Luigi Francioni) il 17 gennaio prossimo.
Come è già noto, i Capitani sono: Davide Mariani (Primo) e Guerrino Vantaggi (Secondo).

Si è svolta nella Basilica di S.Ubaldo la solenne celebrazione in ricordo della Canonizzazione di S.Ubaldo. Il Vescovo, Mons. Pietro Bottaccioli, ha consegnato a Capodieci e Capitani del 2002 ricordo.
Nell'occasione la Famiglia dei Santubaldari ha provveduto, com'è ormai tradizione, alla investitura del proprio Capodieci, con la consegna del relativo "Stemma".

Grande ritrovo di Eugubini in Francia, a Villerupt, città di frontiera vicinissima a Lussemburgo e Thionville. Per l’occasione, la nostra Associazione, ha partecipato con un folto gruppo d’eugubini. I partecipanti sono arrivati a Villerupt dopo aver fatto tappa a Thann.

Il documentario è stato realizzato di Renato Maria Rogari e Daniele Morini.

È stato inaugurato il nuovo campo di allenamento della "società dei balestrieri" .
Dopo un paziente lavoro durato oltre sette mesi è nata una nuova ed efficiente struttura situata nelle immediate vicinanze della stazione di partenza della Funivia.
Al campo di allenamento è stato dato il nome storico di "Balipedio" . In esso sono particolarmente curate le norme di sicurezza.

E' stato presentato il percorso alternativo che permetterà, nel giorno dei ceri, di evitare la folla che si accalca in cima al Buchetto rendendo problematico e pericoloso il passaggio sotto la Porta.
Il nuovo percorso inizia sul finire della salita del Duomo (proprio davanti al campanile) e passando dietro le mura arriva all'inizio del terzo stradone.
